Vogue Portugal: Answering Your Questions
Behind the Scenes: My Vogue Portugal Shoot
Welcome to The Fashion Photography Show! If you’re new here, I’m Olivia Bossert, a London-based fashion photographer with over a decade of experience. I’ve worked with magazines like Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claireand collaborated with brands like Rixo, Daisy Jewellery, and Blink Brow Bar.
In this episode, I’m answering all your burning questions about my Vogue Portugal shoot. This project was a bucket-list moment for me, and I’m thrilled to share the process, insights, and lessons I learned along the way.
How Many Looks Did You Shoot?
We planned for 8 looks but ended up shooting 10, plus a few still-life images you’ll see soon. It was a packed day, but preparation and a strong team made it possible.
How Specific Was Your Pitch?
My pitch was very detailed, which worked to our advantage. We proposed a concept about clothing resembling flowers, which perfectly aligned with Vogue Portugal’s upcoming Blossom issue. Timing was serendipitous, but the specificity of our idea helped it stand out.
From mood boards to lighting and poses, every detail was meticulously planned. Weeks of preparation ensured the final images matched our vision.
What Are Your Tips for Working with a Large Team?
Planning and communication are key when collaborating with a big team. Here’s what worked for us:
Start Early: This shoot took two months of preparation, including multiple Zoom meetings and WhatsApp discussions.
Clear Communication: I shared my vision with the team, and they provided expert feedback to refine the concept.
Organize Timings: With so many moving parts, sticking to a schedule was crucial.
Was the Shoot Paid?
No, this was a self-funded project—a creative investment to fulfill a personal goal of shooting for Vogue. While unpaid, the opportunity brought immense value:
I collaborated with top-tier creatives I wouldn’t have otherwise worked with.
The shoot served as a powerful marketing tool that will generate future opportunities.
It allowed me to check Vogue off my bucket list—a priceless achievement.
How Did You Feel Before and After the Shoot?
Before the shoot, I felt both nervous and excited. The pressure of high expectations was intense, but I had confidence in my team and preparation.
During the shoot, unexpected challenges arose (we fell behind schedule at one point), but we rallied together to get everything done. Afterward, I felt relief and pride. Seeing Vogue’s positive response to the images was the ultimate validation of our hard work.
Who Came Up with the Creative Direction?
I collaborated with Athanas, the art director, to develop the concept. We brainstormed ideas and refined them through Zoom calls before pitching to Vogue. On shoot day, Athanas provided valuable second opinions and helped with post-production image selection.
How Did You Book the Shoot?
It all started with a pitch. Athanas and I crafted a proposal showcasing our concept, including examples of designers and styles we envisioned. About a week after submitting, Vogue Portugal responded with a yes!
